Location: St Martin, Jersey
RAW has been appointed to redevelop and extend an existing 1930's rural coastal house in Jersey, on the Channel Islands. A series of small ad hoc structures have been added to the original house over a period of 40 years.
RAW propose to demolish the existing additions whilst preserving the original building and features. The building sits facing south in the midst of a number of sunflower fields, with north-east views to cliffs, sea and beyond to France. The current configuration of internal spaces does not provide any meaningful views to the coastline, and connections between the primary living spaces and garden are non-existent. The brief is to add a significant amount of additional open family living space which is orientated towards the afternoon sun, the garden to the west and the views to the north-east.
The project presents an architectural opportunity to develop a simple, well crafted, yet intricate, building, using a limited palette of materials.
